Where to Find the Best Thai Baht (THB) Rates in Kuala Lumpur

Thailand is Malaysia's most popular quick getaway — Bangkok weekends, Hat Yai food trips, Phuket beaches. Thai Baht (THB) is one of the most liquid regional currencies in KL, but the spread between the best and worst counter in the same mall can still cost you the price of a night in a Bangkok hotel. This guide shows you how THB is quoted in Malaysia, where the sharpest rates usually are, and how much cash to actually bring.

How Thai Baht is quoted in Malaysia

Most KL money changers quote THB as RM per 100 Baht. If the board shows THB 100 = 13.10 / 13.45, the changer buys 100 Baht from you for RM 13.10 and sells you 100 Baht for RM 13.45. When comparing, always compare the same column — the "sell" column is what you pay when buying Baht with Ringgit.

• Lower sell = better for you. RM 13.30 per 100 THB beats RM 13.50 per 100 THB.
• Units matter. A few changers quote per 1 Baht (0.133) — the number looks tiny but means the same thing. Normalize before comparing.
• Small notes cost more. Baht 20/50/100 notes often sell at a worse rate than Baht 500/1000 notes. Ask before counting out your Ringgit.

Where the sharpest THB rates usually are

1. Mid Valley Megamall. Multiple licensed changers within a few floors compete head-to-head, which keeps the THB spread among the tightest in the country. It's the single most reliable place to start.
2. Bukit Bintang (Sungei Wang, Berjaya Times Square). High tourist turnover means changers here move Baht fast and price aggressively, especially mid-week.
3. KL Sentral. Convenient if you're catching a train or flight, but compare the board against a mall rate first — convenience counters carry wider spreads.

Avoid changing large amounts at KLIA. Airport counters typically run 4–8% worse than mall changers on THB. Change just enough for the taxi and change the rest in the city — or better, in KL before you fly.

How much cash should you bring to Thailand?

Thailand is still cash-heavy outside malls and hotels. Street food, markets, tuk-tuks and massage shops are cash-only. A comfortable rule of thumb for Bangkok is Baht 1,500–2,500 per person per day in cash, plus a card for hotels and big restaurants. PromptPay QR is everywhere, but Malaysian bank apps generally can't scan it — don't count on it.

Should you change in KL or in Bangkok?

Surprisingly, both can win. Bangkok's famous SuperRich counters are excellent, but the top KL changers on a good day are within a fraction of a percent — and you land with cash already in hand. The losing option is almost always the airport on either side. If you're travelling over a weekend, check the KL rate on a Wednesday or Thursday: mid-week spreads are usually tighter than Friday-afternoon panic pricing.

Three mistakes that cost Malaysians money on THB

• Comparing the wrong column. Tourists compare the "buy" rate (what the changer pays you for leftover Baht) instead of the "sell" rate (what you pay). Always use the sell column when buying Baht.
• Changing everything at the airport out of convenience. The difference on RM 2,000 can easily be RM 80–150.
• Ignoring denominations. Some counters advertise a great headline rate but only stock Baht 100 notes at a worse tier. Confirm the rate for the notes you'll actually receive.
